Barbara Nerness

Barbara Nerness is an artist, researcher, and composer based in the San Francisco Bay Area who creates multichannel music and audiovisual experiences incorporating biosignals (heartbeat, brainwaves, breath), field recordings, and guitar. Her work explores the intersection of neuroscience, improvisation, and the body, with research focused on brain dynamics during music improvisation. She holds a PhD from Stanford University's Center for Computer Research in Music and Acoustics (CCRMA) and teaches Technology and Applied Composition at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
