Cuban-American jazz trumpeter, pianist, and composer born in 1949 who became one of the most celebrated virtuosos of his generation. Mentored by Dizzy Gillespie, whom he met in Cuba in 1977, Sandoval defected from Cuba in 1990 and went on to win four Grammy Awards, perform at the White House and Super Bowl, and receive the 2024 Kennedy Center Honors.
